This region in Rajasthan is renowned for its marble and soapstone handicrafts. The rocky terrains form a natural hotspot for various types of stone and marble. Soapstone is a soft mineral containing mostly talc and is very soapy to touch, hence the term. Prior to the carving process, the raw soapstone is sculpted and shaped using a hammer and a chisel to bring out the basic form of the desired product on which the patterns would be carved. The craftsman then marks the outline of the design using a compass.
